Enclavado en el histórico y encantador barrio del Born en Barcelona este luminoso loft de doble altura, de 150 metros cuadrados más 70 de terraza, ha sido reformado por el estudio de arquitectura Gokostudio.
Con un estilo industrial, minimalista y urbano, el objetivo de esta reforma ha sido sumar privacidad a los distintos espacios de la vivienda y así posibilitar la simultaneidad de actividades.
“Hemos querido mantener el carácter espacial que le proporciona la doble altura y la impronta de su cubierta vista; nuestro mayor condicionante era no triturar la espacialidad de este gran contender” explican Bettina Koroluk y Claudio González, ambos arquitectos y socios fundadores de Gokostudio.
De este modo, lo que podía ser una limitación se ha convertido en una oportunidad. Se formaliza un filtro sutil y efectivo entre las estancias de la planta buhardilla y la planta principal, que se consigue con la incorporación de dos carpinterías trasparentes, que aportan el filtro acústico. Gruesos cortinajes correderos añaden filtro visual, solo cuando es necesario.
En la planta baja, en cambio, se ha buscado integrar la cocina al espacio principal para hacerla partícipe de la vida social y ampliar la superficie útil del comedor. Para ello, Gokostudio ha eliminado el baño que la bloqueaba relegándola a un espacio en túnel, oscuro y apartado. Ahora esta cocina se abre al salón comedor con contundencia, equipada con una pequeña isla con dos taburetes altos.
Materiales silenciosos que revalorizan el pasado
La reforma busca, a través de una cuidada selección de materiales, poner en valor el sistema constructivo centenario del edificio. Se ha elegido un parquet de madera natural para el pavimento de ambas plantas que, junto con la cubierta de vigas de madera original, aportan carácter y calidez.
El resto de los materiales son silenciosos: cumplen su función desde el punto de vista constructivo, pero no contaminan ni visual ni estilísticamente el conjunto. Con este mismo propósito, la paleta cromática escogida en gris, marrón, blanco y negro es esencialmente discreta, ningún elemento destaca más que otro.
El toque de estilo industrial, en claro homenaje al pasado del edificio, lo pone la escalera metálica que comunica las distintas plantas y su robusta estructura de hierro.
La elección de la luminaria escogida para el espacio en doble altura, completa el conjunto espacial: cables eléctricos negros dibujan geometrías en tres dimensiones que, a pesar de su gran tamaño, crean un efecto de transparencia sin sobrecargar el espacio.
Un oasis en medio de la ciudad
Por último, cabe mencionar la privilegiada terraza para disfrutar del clima amable de Barcelona, donde una cocina de exterior se integra calladamente en la zona de comedor de verano, bajo una cubierta de cañas naturales. Lamas de madera natural configuran paredes, pavimento y mobiliario. Mientras que sillas y lámparas suspendidas de fibras naturales completan el conjunto.
“Los materiales naturales -piedra, ladrillo, madera- permiten que nuestra vista penetre en las superficies para que nos convenzamos de la veracidad de su materia. Dejándolos al descubierto, expresan la edad y la historia de la casa, del edificio. Está pátina del desgaste añade al espacio la experiencia del tiempo” explican los responsables de Gokostudio, quienes aseguran que “un espacio no se experimenta con una serie de imágenes visuales, sino en la presencia material y sensorial de sus luces y sombras, sus olores, la humedad, el oxígeno, la textura, el peso, la densidad y la temperatura de los materiales que la componen. El resto de materiales elegidos, son silenciosos, mínimos, para dialogar con la belleza esencial de las preexistencias, en un acto de gratitud y acompañamiento”, detallan.
Located within the historic neighborhood of El Born in Barcelona, this luminous double-height loft, spanning 150 square meters plus a 70-square-meter terrace, has been renovated by the architectural firm Gokostudio.
With an industrial, minimalist, and urban style, the goal of this renovation was to add privacy to the different spaces of the residence, enabling the simultaneity of activities.
»We wanted to maintain the spatial character provided by the double height and the imprint of its exposed roof; our major constraint was not to crush the spatiality of this large container,» explain Bettina Koroluk and Claudio González, both architects and founding partners of Gokostudio.
In this way, what could have been a limitation has turned into an opportunity. A subtle and effective filter is established between the attic floor and the main floor, achieved by incorporating two transparent carpentries that provide acoustic filtering. Thick sliding curtains add a visual filter, only when necessary.»
On the ground floor, on the other hand, the goal was to integrate the kitchen into the main space to make it a participant in social life and expand the usable surface of the dining area. To achieve this, Gokostudio has eliminated the bathroom that blocked it, relegating it to a tunnel-like, dark, and secluded space. Now, this kitchen boldly opens up to the living-dining room, equipped with a small island with two high stools.
Silent Materials that Revalue the Past
The renovation aims, through a careful selection of materials, to highlight the century-old construction system of the building. A natural wood parquet has been chosen for the flooring of both floors, which, along with the original wooden beam roof, adds character and warmth.
The rest of the materials are silent: they serve their purpose from a constructive point of view but do not visually or stylistically contaminate the overall design. With this same purpose, the chosen color palette in gray, brown, white, and black is essentially discreet, with no element standing out more than another.
The touch of industrial style, in clear homage to the building’s past, is provided by the metal staircase that connects the different floors and its robust iron structure.
The choice of lighting for the double-height space completes the spatial ensemble: black electrical cables draw geometries in three dimensions that, despite their large size, create a transparent effect without overloading the space.
An Oasis in the Middle of the City
Finally, it’s worth mentioning the privileged terrace to enjoy Barcelona’s pleasant climate, where an outdoor kitchen quietly integrates into the summer dining area under a cover of natural reeds. Natural wood slats configure walls, flooring, and furniture. Meanwhile, chairs and suspended lamps made of natural fibers complete the ensemble.
«Natural materials such as stone, brick, and wood allow our gaze to penetrate the surfaces so that we can be convinced of the truth of their substance. By leaving them exposed, they express the age and history of the house, of the building. The patina of wear adds to the space the experience of time,» explain the individuals at Gokostudio. They assert that «a space is not experienced through a series of visual images, but in the material and sensory presence of its lights and shadows, its smells, humidity, oxygen, texture, weight, density, and the temperature of the materials that compose it. The rest of the chosen materials are silent, minimal, to engage in a dialogue with the essential beauty of the pre-existing elements, in an act of gratitude and companionship,» they detail.
